The app

Cards Inc. makes Cards Inc., an app for studying Japanese vocabulary with spaced repetition. You can use it without an account: decks, cards and review history live on your device, and nothing about studying requires signing in.

An account adds backup and keeps two devices in step. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details to yourself, and for what happens under your account.

The free plan

Without a subscription you get five dictionary searches a day, three decks of your own, and twenty cards in each. Reading a word inside an example sentence is not a search and is never counted.

The limits are enforced on your device, so they apply whether you are online or not. They can change as the app changes; if they tighten, existing decks are never deleted to make them fit.

Premium

Premium removes those limits. It is sold as an auto-renewing subscription through the App Store: your Apple Account is charged at confirmation of purchase, and again each period until you cancel. The price you see at purchase is the one that applies, in your own currency.

Renewal happens unless you turn it off at least 24 hours before the period ends. Manage or cancel in Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions; cancelling stops the next charge and leaves access running to the end of the period you have paid for.

Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. A refund revokes premium immediately.

Buying requires an account, because a subscription belongs to the account rather than to the phone — that is what lets it follow you to a new device through Restore Purchases.

The study content

The example sentences written for the seed vocabulary are our own and are still being reviewed by a native speaker. Treat them as teaching material in progress rather than as a reference work: wording may change.

Dictionary entries beyond that set come from JMdict, published by the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence. That credit appears in Settings whenever the bundled dictionary is in use.

Fair use

Use the app for your own study. Do not try to break, overload or reverse the service, do not resell access, and do not bulk-extract the content through the API.

We can suspend an account that is doing one of those things, or that is being used to harm somebody else.

What we do not promise

The app is provided as it is. We work to keep it correct and available, but we do not promise it is free of mistakes, that the sentences are flawless, or that the service is never interrupted.

Nothing here limits rights you have under the consumer law that applies to you.

Ending it

You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Delete account. That removes everything synced to it from our servers, permanently. What is stored on your phone stays on your phone until you delete the app.

We can end an account that breaks these terms. If we change these terms in a way that matters, the app will say so before the change takes effect.
